Chase County Doin's
June 26, 2008 - Friday night will be OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY. We'll have some extra folks in the listening audience, so come on down and make 'em all feel welcome! There'll be an entire family reunion in attendance, and some folks from the High School Reunion group. There'll be some visiting going on, for sure! Saturday night, be here for THE CLASSICS on Broadway. They'll be performing at the 100th Anniversary Class Reunion of Chase County Community High School Saturday night festivities. This is the same group we enjoyed so much last year, with a couple of special guests. Again, bring your lawn chairs and the bug spray! Inasmuch as there will be no paper next week, you'll have to try to remember THIS from now till then.......Join us for JUDY CODER and her special guest JAKE SIMPSON on Broadway, Saturday evening, July 5 at 7:30 PM. Bring your lawn chairs and your insect repellant. We're expecting some fine music, with a brief intermission for fireworks. We're gonna keep this a bit
short this week. We wanted to save room to wish a grand vacation
week to the staff of the Chase County Leader News! Go away -
have some fun - come back rested - we've got a whole 'nuther
half a year to deal with..........in our summertime Community
of Chase County, Kansas! June 19, 2008 - Didja get it all done this past weekend? What a grand weekend in the Flint Hills! And we'd like to commend whomever was in charge of the weather. Really good job! LOTS of new musicians at Pickin' on Friday and Saturday evenings. A group of fun folks from the Winfield and Wichita areas. And a really lovely couple from Arizona. All of whom have declared that they'll be back again! What a wonderful couple of fun evenings! Friday evening, June 20, we'll
be outside on Broadway (weather permitting) for TALLGRASS GOSPEL
SINGIN'. And barring any hideous news event that would take precedence,
the Topeka Capital newspaper plans to be here to cover music
that night. So, do plan to be here - with your instrument or
with your lawn chair, to join us for another fine night of music
on Broadway. Get ready for "The CLASSICS" on Saturday evening, June 28. They'll be here to perform for the 100th Chase County High School Reunion Street Dance. Bob and Nancy were amongst musicians who were here last weekend. And they are looking forward to seeing ya'll in a couple of weeks. Now EVERYBODY is invited to attend the Dance. So, we'll see ya' all there! On Saturday evening, July 5, we'll welcome JUDY CODER and her young friend, JAKE SIMPSON to Cottonwood Falls. Jake is a fine fiddle player, and we always enjoy Judy! That's fireworks evening, as well, so we'll pause the music to enjoy fireworks above the buildings........and afterwards, we'll re-direct our attention back to the stage. So bring your lawn chairs........and possibly your favorite mosquito repellant. Our CHASE COUNTY FACT OF THE WEEK: Not only was Salmon P. Chase a Supreme Court Justice.........he was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a position which he held until his death in l873. Just a little news note: We see STUFF on the shelves over at the Jim Bells store, and more arriving every day. That's gotta be progress!!!!!!! So, rest a little, and we'll see ya' next weekend.........in our SPECTACULAR Community of Chase County, Kansas! June 12, 2008 - Information for all TallGrass Pickers and Accomplished Listeners: The Topeka Capital is planning to be here on Friday night June 20 to record TallGrass Gospel Singin'. So, saddle your favorite lawn chair and join us downtown on Broadway at 7:30 PM. Our CHASE COUNTY FACT of the week. Besides being Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, Salmon P. Chase was also selected by Abraham Lincoln to serve as a Supreme Court Justice. This is the last call for Mike Holder's WILDFLOWER TOUR. Call the Extension office to reserve the last seat on the bus. The tour will be held twice on Thursday, June 12. Have you SEEN the wildflowers? SPECTACULAR, this year. FLINT HILLS FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL
- the weekend of June 14 and 15, down at Swope Park. There'll
be music on Friday night downtown, and music at the Park on Saturday
night. Saturday night, July 5, we'll be looking forward to meeting JUDY CODER's friend JAKE SIMPSON, right here on Broadway. We'll fetch out the portable stage, and nestle down on our lawn chairs to enjoy an evening of find fiddle-playin' and Miss Judy's singin' and yodelin'. Carol and Charley Klamm has the privilege of hearing Jake not long ago at an event they attended in Oklahoma. Says he's really GOOD! The "CLASSICS" will be here to play the Saturday night dance during REUNION WEEKEND in June. We've had a lot of fun with them in the past, and we know that they've invited Richard Stone to join the group for a few tunes during that evening. It will be a fine night on Broadway! Speaking of which...........if you have not already made your reservations for High School Reunion, you might wanna get that done. This is the 100th year for CCHS. We'll catch ya' again next week..........in our very busy Community of Chase County, Kansas. June 5, 2008 - HaHo! Here's some late breaking news for all the TallGrass Pickers and the audience of accomplished listeners. The Topeka Capital reporter just called, and they're planning to be here with photographers on Friday night, June 20th to report on your jam session. So, grease up your lawn chairs and change the strings on your instrument! We'll see ya' then. R*O*D*E*O........We're just SO ready. Our weather information looks good for three days. We'll see ya' there. And REMEMBER...........there is NO MUSIC at the Emma on Friday night of Rodeo! Our CHASE COUNTY FACT of the
week. Besides being Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, Salmon P.
Chase was also selected by Abraham Lincoln as a Supreme Court
Justice. FLINT HILLS FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL - the weekend of June 14 and 15, down at Swope Park. There'll be music on Friday night downtown, and music at the Park on Saturday night. Sataurday night, July 5, we'll be looking forward to meeting JUDY CODER's friend JAKE SIMPSON, right here on Broadway. If you have not already purchased a drawing ticket for the TOUGH ENOUGH TO QUILT PINK quilt..........then, you probably outta get that done. The drawing will be held at the RODEO. And a good chunk of the proceeds will go to support breast cancer research in one manner or another. We're proud of this group.........and proud of the cowboys who are "tough enough to wear pink". We'll catch ya' again next week..........in our very busy Community of Chase County, Kansas. May 29, 2008 - There is a slim possibility that it might rain! Some. Maybe. Perhaps. On the bright side, we won't have to water for, say.......four days! Friday night was the second
outdoor pickin' of the year. We think it's safe to say that we
could get addicted to that idea! Our CHASE COUNTY FACT of the week: Whose picture is on the $10,000.00 bill? Yup, you're RIGHT! Salmon Portland Chase! While his President, Abraham Lincoln is portrayed on the penny. I suppose it goes without saying that most of us have seen more pennies than $10,000.00 bills! In last week's "guests from out of the country" segment.......we failed to mention the group from Korea. And this weekend, there was a couple from Germany, camping out at the lake during the rainstorm.......in a tent! They said to Monty that they will "never forget it!" RODEO tickets are on sale.......both
at the Emma.........and in the booth over at the Rodeo arena.
And "TOUGH ENOUGH TO QUILT PINK" tickets are also available
at the Emma. FLINT HILLS FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL will be held down at Swope Park this year........the weekend of June 14 & 15. Many of our local folks will be helping to make things special. On Saturday night, July 5, we'll gather out on Broadway to enjoy JUDY CODER and JAKE SIMPSON. You have until June 1 to vote to the Chase County CourtHouse as one of the 8 Architectural Wonders of Kansas. Vote online at http://kansassampler.org/8wonders/vote.php. Or stop by the Chamber Office for a paper ballot to mail in. So, have a lovely week, in our pretty soggy Community of Chase County, Kansas. Perhaps it'll get all the rain out of it's system before Rodeo Weekend! Yeaaaaa May 22, 2008 - So, ya' recon' the wind will blow? Mercy! We enjoyed our FIRST outside Pickin' of the year. It was so fine! Got a little chilly towards the end, but what's a goosebump among friends? And speaking of friends........the TallGrass Pickers will miss their #1 Fan, Sammy Roberts. Sammy always thought that we sounded better than we did, and we loved him for it! Condolences to Miss Irma and Rick from all of us TallGrass Pickers. Our next Friday offering is OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY. The weather doesn't look like we'll be outdoors, but there's a couple of days yet.........things could change. Music at 7:30, wherever we are! Then, this month, there are FIVE Fridays. So, the last one will be FOLK MUSIC and CONTRA MUSIC jam session. Our CHASE COUNTY FACT of the week: Salmon Portland Chase served this country as Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of the Treasury. Now, remember all this stuff - there'll be a test later! And here's some more interesting stuff: Visitors to the Emma in the past 8 days have included 3 different groups of folks from England; one group from Holland, three groups from Germany, two lovely gentlemen from Brazil, one group from Australia, a group from Sweden, a really nice guy from Italy, and some from Scotland. It seems that diminished "value" of the American Dollar makes travel in the U.S. a "bargain" for folks from elsewhere. Oh, yeah! RODEO is close upon us. We have some tickets for sale here at the Emma. AND, Miss Mary Jones and Crew have made a beautiful quilt for the "Tough Enough to Quilt Pink" campaign, and we have drawing tickets available for that, also. And unless we miss our guess........that would be the grand and gorgeous thing hanging for all to see over there in the Chamber Office window. And speaking of the Chamber Office........you might wanna call 'em up to reserve your seat for the Chamber's "RIVER SUITE" occasion, to be held on Friday night, June 13. Their number 273-8469. That same weekend (Saturday, June 14, and Sunday, June 15) is the FLINT HILLS FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL........to be held at Swope Park again this year. And remember that on Saturday night, July 5, we'll welcome JUDY CODER and JAKE SIMPSON to downtown Cottonwood Falls. And we are compelled to remind you all again..........to get your vote counted for the Chase County CourtHouse as one of the "8 Wonders of Kansas". Miss Deb has some ballots over at the Chamber Office, or you can vote online at http://kansassampler.org/8wonders/vote.php We're working on a grand summer for our green-carpeted Community of Chase County, Kansas! May 15, 2008 - Our "intimate evening with Jon Troast" was a winner! Jon is a delightful young man, very attractive, very personable, a wonderful song writer, and a spectacular guitar picker! We did have a good time! Now...........HERE's a bit of
follow up on the Kansas Sampler Festival: We met a gentleman
at the festival who apparently thinks we here in Chase County
don't know enough about our heritage. Now, we do NOT agree with
him, but just on the off-chance that there is somebody out there
who doesn't have this information right at their fingertips........we're
gonna provide a fact a week over the next several weeks, about
our beloved Chase County, so that we can ALL know ALL the answers.
And here's the first tidbit of information: Chase County, Kansas
is named for Salmon Portland Chase. Now, you may take all week
to digest that fact, and there's be another tidbit next week. Time is passing by for us to
vote for the "8 ARCHITECTURAL WONDERS OF KANSAS". So,
go to http://kansassampler.org/8wonders/vote.php
and cast your vote for 8 of the find structures in Kansas......but
make sure that you vote for our beautiful Chase County CourtHouse. And that also means that Memorial Day Weekend is closing in on us. As always, we'll greet a large group of bicycle riders who are doing the Cottonwood 200 on Memorial Weekend Sunday. And THIS year.......they'll get to ride on the new trail between towns. Mike Holder said that they'd try to get together some sort of sign to direct the folks to the trail, and across the bridge and on into town. Won't THEY be surprised.......and pleased, we're sure. And, as the weather turns to summertime, we are noticing signs with "eyes" on 'em......urging us to watch for motorcycles. And that's good information. Bikers love to ride the Flint Hills, like they love to ride the Black Hills of South Dakota. Minus the strange party downtown!!!!! We've mentioned before..........that
JUDY CODER and JAKE SIMPSON will join us on the bricks on Saturday
evening, July 5. It'll be a find evening on Broadway - do plan
to join us. May 8, 2008 - So, this year's Kansas Sampler Festival is history! There was good attendance at the Festival despite some cool, windy weather the first day. Special thanks to Jeff, Charley & Carol, and Ruth.......for the great effort. The Chase County Contingent felt as though we had good inquiries. We all handed out a lot of literature. And the "baby" CourtHouse was a big hit, as always (special thanks to Leola for that!) Now........here's what we have
to do: So, have you noticed all the
activity over at the Jim Bells store? Fine things are happenin'
over there. You'd be ABSOLUTELY amazed at how many folks we met
at the Festival (in Concordia, now)........who knew the
store was closed. And many of them already knew that it would
be re-opening. And for the rest who didn't......we got to TELL
'em that it would re-open soon. And THAT announcement was met
with a great reception. Isn't this a hoot???? Life in Chase County
just keeps gettin' better n' better! Friday evening will be K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN'. We'll expect some folks from out-of-town. So, if whoever is in charge of the rain, would be EXTREMELY careful this week........we'd have ANOTHER wonderful week in our greener-n'-anything Community of Chase County, Kansas! May 1, 2008 - Wowser! Have you noticed that the flowering trees and shrubs seem to be particularly colorful this year? Or is it that we were just in particular need of something colorful to look at this year? And there is nuthin' but Good News! We've been in touch with JUDY CODER several times this week. She is bringing a special guest to Cottonwood Falls with her this year. She will be bringing JAKE SIMPSON of Wyandotte, Oklahoma. Jake began entertaining when he was two, and playing fiddle when he was five. He's now 16, and is a prominent fiddler known through the country. We'll be telling you a bit more about Jake for the next few weeks.........and there's a lot to tell. So, make your plans for Saturday evening, July 5, 7:30 PM on the Broadway Bricks in downtown Cottonwood Falls. Judy promises us a whale of an evening! We're excited about our "INTIMATE EVENING WITH JON TROAST". Join us at the Emma on Saturday nite May 10 at 6:00 PM for dinner and entertainment. Jon joins us after the ESU World Premier of "Mary Jane: An Indie Rock Romance". John has appeared on "Prairie Home Companion" with Garrison Keillor. This is big time stuff, folks! Make your reservations by calling 273-6020. Friday evening, May 2, plan to be at the Emma for TALLGRASS PICKERS. We've seen the weather report.........and it's a little early yet for the lawn chairs, but we're getting closer! We cannot WAIT to get outside for the summer! Flint Hills FolkLife Festival is the second weekend in June. There is some fine stuff planned, by some fine folks. It will be a good time as always! And music every Friday night (except for Rodeo Weekend). It'll be a fine summer! And we cannot WAIT.........in our still a little-bit chilly Community of Chase County, Kansas. April 17, 2008 - Prairie Fire Festival week has come and gone, and it was a good 'un. The Elderhostel tour group joined us Tuesday night for poetry and photographs. On a cold, rainy evening Wednesday, we listened to Peg Busselle, Neva McCabe, Don Evans and Leola Evans discuss early days in Chase County. Thursday evening was wonderful! The Medicine Park Singers were somethin' else! We thought that the proposal of marriage (on bended knee) before the demonstration was particularly poignant! The drummers/singers were special. The lady dancers were wonderful. The children were adorable! Apache Jay did a wonderful job explaining/teaching/answering questions. And everybody was delightful to visit with. We think it is safe to say that the Medicine Park Singers WILL be back. In fact, we're working together on an entire PowWow to be held here locally. How grand is that? Friday's music was just excellent, with new musicians joining us from at least three different directions! And the seminars Saturday were just the BEST! We thank the Chase County Art Guild for their display. Rex Buchman was fun, and the Beasley Boys were dynamite! We're looking forward to next year already! Let's see........this Friday night, April 18, is TALLGRASS GOSPEL night. Saturday evening, April 19, is CONTRA DANCE night.........at the Coffee Company, I believe.........6:30 for instruction. The 25th of April is OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY jam session. Saturday, May 10, we'll enjoy an intimate evening with JON TROAST, singer, songwriter, at the Emma. This will be a dinner and music event; reservations required; limited seating. Remember, now, June is not that far away! June 6, 7 & 8 is the Flint Hills Rodeo. And June 14 and 15, the FlintHills FolkLife Festival! And this has GOTTA be the 11th year for that! We have a couple of long-range dates for you to mark down on your social calendars. Sunday, May 18 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, plan to meet at Pioneer Bluffs for a geologic discussion of the Flint Hills by Ken Warren. On Saturday, June 14, there'll be an Open House at Pioneer Bluffs. Yes, indeedy........that WAS the sun we saw today.........right after the nasty old frost of last night! Whatever........it's gotta be gettin' closer to Spring, in our smokey, Prairie Fire Community of Chase County, Kansas! April 3, 2008 - Besides the wind.......and the rain........and the lack of sunshine, this week, we've heard some sad news. We got an email from Judy Coder announcing the "disbanding" of Judy Coder and the Pride of the Prairie Band. We immediately emailed to see if we should have one final dance on Broadway, and the reply was......that they would honor their commitments through the end of September, but that they were not booking any additional gigs. It seems that everybody wants to strike out in different directions, so the break-up is amicable, but sad, sad, for all of us! We want 'em to know how they have added to our musical go-round here in Chase County, Kansas. What a pleasure it has been! This next week is PRAIRIE FIRE FESTIVAL. The schedule is elsewhere in this paper, but we'd like to remind ya'll that Mike Holder's talk is the BASIS for the entire Prairie Fire Festival. What he is able to tell us annually, is the reason we try to put this informational festival together. Mike speaks at 6:30 Monday evening, April 7. And a reminder about the Medicine
Park Singers and Dancers......we're hoping to be able to
witness this performance outdoors. The group says that they perform
in all kinds of weather, but we're not sure that we can "listen"
in all kinds of weather. So, if it's fairly decent outside, plan
to dressing accordingly and bring a lawn chair. If it is just
absolutely awful, we'll be inside. That's at 6:30 (or 6:45) Thursday. And Saturday is THE BEASLEY BOYS in Concert. We've added a bit on Saturday evening. If you're a few minutes early, you'll get to enjoy Rex Buchman and a bit of Cowboy Poetry at 7:00 PM. These events will be held at the Coffee Company. And maybe, just MAYBE, the weather will settle down enough so that there will actually BE some prairie fires burning.........in our Prairie Fire Community of Chase County, Kansas. March 27, 2008 - Spring Break has come and gone! And our special Spring Break present this year, was a visit from the Houston son, Brian, and his beautiful wife, Shari, and our grandsons, Kelly (8) and Justin (nearly 6). We accomplished everything on our list, and as an added bonus, the boys went fishing.......and actually caught a fish! I think everybody could have played a little longer, but it was time to get back to Houston. It was a great way to welcome the Spring of the year! And we all got to enjoy Pickin' last Friday night. Little Brother Ed's children and their families were there. And Derrick helped Justin play the fiddle. It was fine! Next Friday night will be OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY. PRAIRIE FIRE FESTIVAL isn't far away. We understand that along with the usual festivities, that John Morrison will have his exhibit at the Gallery at Cottonwood Falls. Be sure to look about for a schedule of events. We had a swell time at Tea last week. It has been suggested that we ask Jackie Dickie to bring her photos from their China trip for the next tea. "The next Tea"......hmmmmm.......that sounds like fun! We'll keep ya' posted for the date. Had a phone call from Dan Bliss this week. He is offering to come down to "open" for Nick Charles this fall for BroomWeed Festival. Now........THAT'd be a treat. We'd have to begin music early, so's we could get it all in!!!!!!! We have been sizing up the fabric for the new gown for the Grand Ball for the opening of the Chase County CourtHouse. That's gonna be SOME occasion! And we'll give you a date just as soon as we get one. Sometime late Summer, perhaps. A bit of wind, some sunshine, and a little rain.........sounds like Springtime in our wonderful Community of Chase County, Kansas!!!!!!!!!! March 13, 2008 - Oh My! Wow! Whew! Sigh! That was SOME evening! The Spring Ball is history! It was beautiful; it was spectacular; it was amazing! Four hours of the most wonderful music; the sensational costumes; fabulous atmosphere! It was quite the event. Whoever would have thought that there would be so many people from ALL OVER the State who liked to dress up in costume. There was everything from a young man straight out of Dickens' Christmas Carol, to Mountain Men, to Western Shooters (complete with sidearms), to the Boer Wars Soldiers, Confederate Soldiers, Union Soldiers, to 1861 formal attire, to 1873 Cowboy stuff. And ladies in hoop skirts, in bustles, in cotton gowns, in taffeta gowns, in satin gowns. And children in PRECIOUS gowns.......and dancing their little hearts out. Hats off to Derrick Doty and Company. It was an amazing event! So, this coming Friday is K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN'' at the Emma at 7:30 PM. And Saturday is the monthly CONTRA DANCE. We're looking forward to seeing some of the 4-H youth in attendance. Ladies (and Gentlemen), make your reservations for TEA AT THREE at the Emma. We'll enjoy a St. Patrick's Day tea on Monday, March 17 at 3:00. Hat and gloves required. And the following Friday, March 21, is TALLGRASS GOSPEL. We MIGHT have some special guests from Texas with us. And to follow up a bit.......mark your calendars for Thursday evening, April 10. We had invited a gentleman from Wichita who makes Native American Drums......to come play show and tell during Prairie Fire Festival. Well, he asked if he could bring his "Singers". And, when we were making arrangements with "Apache Joe" for the "Singers", he asked if they could bring their "Women". He said that there was one National Champion Dancer, and several Princesses! Now, like, we're gonna turn any of this down, for Heaven's sake???? So, on Thursday, April 10, plan to join us to see MEDICINE PARK Native American drum players, singers, and dancers........all in Native American dress. On Saturday, April 12 at 7:30 PM, join us for The THE BEASLEY BOYS in Concert for the Prairie Fire Festival. On Saturday, May 10, JON TROAST will be in concert at the Emma. This evening (dinner and performance) is by reservation only 273-6020. Now, there's MORE than one Bluebird. We're hopeful; we're optomistic - we're praying!!!!!!! So, happy nearly Springtime in our not-yet-very-warm Community of Chase County, Kansas. March 6, 2008 - It's here; it's finally here! Saturday evening, this week, March 8......is the SPRING BALL. The Victorian-style ball will be held from 8 to 12 PM at the Community Building at Swope Park. Costumes are encouraged, but not required; it is a dress-up occasion. Families are encouraged to come join in. The Ball is an excellent opportunity for young people to learn history, manners, etiquette, customs......of previous times. The orchestra (yes, ORCHESTRA) is sounding wonderful, and so many people have put so much work into this. We do hope that you'll enjoy it. Tickets are available at the Emma, and will also be available at the door. It will be a FINE evening. The dances will be taught/explained. Now, just in case you might have thought we were talking about Spring.........sadly, we weren't. But, how far away can it really be? We saw our first bluebird yesterday. We know that Diana is busy scoping the skies for the first buzzard, and Sunday evening last, we were discussing Spring frogs. NEXT Saturday evening will be the March Contra Dance (held on the 3rd Saturday night of every month). This next month's dance will also be at the Community Building. And we know that all of the County's 4-H youth have been invited to attend, compliments of the Chase County Contra Society. A couple of long-range events
for you to put into your social calendars: The music every Friday night........at 7:30 PM. Ya might want to re-do the webbing on the old lawn chair. Maybe oil the hinges a little bit. It's gonna be a fun year in our musical Community of Chase County, Kansas. Questions? Email us |
